The Airy Way: The wonderful world of fresh chutney
I have been cooking lately, a lot, even for me, all Indian food all the time, which I hope my neighbors in my building appreciate as much as I do.? To be honest, I've probably tested their patience enough, though as of yet no one has slipped a note under my door telling me so...Indian spices are coming out of my pores when I exercise so they're most likely making their way down the common hallway as well.
So yesterday it snowed all day, our first real snowstorm of this extraordinarily mild winter, and since I couldn't get out without making some kind of extraordinary effort, and since I'd just been to Chinatown on Friday with my friend Fi, where I found big fresh bundles of methi leaves and curry leaves and some gorgeous little bowls...okay, I found three large grocery bags of stuff but then I don't get to Chinatown all that often...anyway, I decided to make an afternoon of it and experiment with a few chutneys.
Add salt and pepper to taste.? You're done.? Easy peasy:
2.? Roasted dal and fresh green chile pepper chutney (Bhel-puri ki chutni)
Once the dal is roasted:
...let it cool, then powderize it up in a spice grinder (I use the Magic Bullet):
Mix the dal with the green paste, add salt to taste:
Delicious!
Lightly roast all this stuff together, until it turns into this: ...while you bake your dessicated coconut in the oven on low heat until it's golden.? The smell from this is simply amazing:
Grind up the coconut.? Mine turned into a sort of delicious roast-coconut butter.? Not sure if that's right, but it's what happened and the results were yummy, so I won't complain:
This chutney is a little more complex.? You finish it off with a tarka of oil, mustard seeds, dried hot peppers...
...curry leaves and asafoetida:
Add the ground spice mix to the ground coconut along with some tamarind paste and the tarka:
...to get the finished chutney:
This looks a little dull, perhaps, but it is packed with flavour, and I ate way too much of it just as is.

So good!
But I can't stop.? These are not 30-minute meals; they're 3-hour experimental extravaganzas, difficult to blog because everything is so very new and fun that there's nothing in particular I can get a proper focus on.
Also, I've had trouble, which sounds sort of peculiar, arranging the food properly on a plate.? Normally, as you know, I let everything duke it out in a bowl, but that doesn't cut it with Indian meals because not all the items are friends with all the others, and the way you eat these meals is complex in itself, arranging little tasty mouthfuls of this and that, or this, that, and the other thing, spooning a bit of saucy curry over rice, dipping up some raita with a piece of flatbread, following a bite of something fiery hot with a cooling chaser.? In the end, I've settled on a sort of thali arrangement, like you might get in an Indian restaurant, with the different foods separated in bowls on a large round plate.? There are actual thali plates, big round metal plates with shallow indentations to keep the various foods separate, but I don't have one.? I do, however, have a lot of little bowls.

My guide on this journey has been Neelam Batra's 1,000 Indian Recipes.? This is a perfect book for Western cooks with intermediate Indian cooking skills, like me.? Apart from being big and heavy and of many pages, with recipes that are easy to follow and always work out, lots of definitions and explanations of basic techniques, and being very kind about giving the English as well as the Indian names for things (split pigeon peas and toor dal; fenugreek leaves and methi), it's an omni cookbook, but vegan friendly: all the vegan recipes are marked with a big "V" and you've got to love a cookbook where the meat recipes are consigned to a section called "Non-Vegetarian Fare."
In my family, we grew up making rhubarb chutney, green tomato chutney, fruit chili--boiled, jam-like concoctions, very sweet, that will keep in a sealed jar for ages.? But in Indian cooking, there are two main types of chutney--that "jammy" kind, called preserved chutney, and fresh chutney, which won't keep longer than a few days in the fridge and is more like a salsa.? This post is about the fresh kind, of which I made:
1.? Basic green chutney (Hari chutney)
I don't want to infringe on Ms. Batra's copyright, but here's Manjula's version.? Get together your green onions, cilantro, mint (frozen in this case), lime juice, green chilis, and sugar and process to a paste:
Add salt and pepper to taste.? You're done.? Easy peasy:

Bhel-puri is a kind of Indian snack made with potatoes and puffed rice, and is served with many kinds of chutneys, including this one.? You can check out the recipe if you like on Google Books.? 4.? One more, a dal-based chutney this time, which is meant to be stirred into yogurt, Yogurt chutney with roasted dals and spices (Dahi aur bhuni dal ki chutni).? Start with some dry split chickpeas, urad beans, and mung beans (channa dal, urad dal, and moong dal):

?So...now that you've got all these chutneys, how to use them?
First, you can make big batches and freeze them in little portions, in an ice cube tray, for instance, so you don't have to go through all this trouble more often than occasionally.? I made little batches because I was experimenting.
The chutneys can all be served plain as a condiment, perhaps with a bit of water added to make them softer.
They can be mixed up with yogurt, or yogurt and cold vegetables like cucumber and/or tomato, to make another kind of chutney, or a raita, or with warm vegetables to make a side dish.
Spread them into a sandwich.
Use them as a dip or salad dressing.
Mix them up with cooked rice for flavoring.
Pour them (with or without yogurt) over cooked vegetables.
Have them with yogurt and bread as a quick little meal or snack.
Use them for adding a burst of flavour to soups and stews.
Don't forget to label them!
Here's something I made up, though I'm sure it's not original.? I mixed some fresh sesame-peanut chutney with a little water and two tablespoons of chickpea flour to make a paste:

So good!

In legislatures and courtrooms, busy weeks ahead for voter ID

In an election year dominated by battles over health care mandates, tax rates, and rising gasoline prices, it?s the mechanics of voting ? and who?ll get to vote in November ? that?s getting full-time attention from state legislators, election lawyers, and judges.
In the latest example, the Virginia state Senate is headed for a vote Friday on a new voter identification requirement ? one more indication that the voter ID controversy will keep boiling in legislatures and in the courts right up to Election Day.
These new voter ID laws are being proposed almost exclusively by Republican legislators and governors in states throughout the nation, spawning both litigation and angry rhetoric from Democrats.
?All of a sudden after the 2008 election, these (voter ID laws) miraculously appear,? said Rep. Frederica Wilson, D- Fla. at a recent anti-voter ID event at the Capitol. ?Why? Because we have a black president in the White House and it is to stop all of the people of color from ? coming out to vote, because they (the proponents of voter ID laws) know who they are targeting ?"
Here?s the status of some recently enacted voter ID laws and states where such laws might be considered this year:
Enacted but blocked
South Carolina: Last December, the Justice Department denied approval of the state?s voter ID law requiring voters to present photo identification that Gov. Nikki Haley had signed in May. Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, South Carolina is one of nine states that must seek approval, or ?pre-clearance,? from the Justice Department or a federal court in Washington, D.C., in order to make any change in voting procedure.
State Attorney General Alan Wilson brought suit in federal court, arguing that the requirements ?are at most a temporary inconvenience? to some voters. The state contended that its law was nearly identical to one enacted by Indiana and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008. Therefore barring South Carolina from doing what Indiana had done would ?raise serious constitutional concerns? about whether Section 5 ?violates South Carolina?s right to equal sovereignty.?
In a separate but related case with big implications for voter ID laws, Shelby County, Ala., is fighting in the federal appeals court in Washington to have Section 5 of VRA struck down as unconstitutional. The appeals court heard oral arguments on Jan. 19 and a ruling is likely in the next several weeks. ?The Shelby County case will likely end up before the Supreme Court and if the justices were to strike down Section 5, the Justice Department would no longer be able to pre-emptively block changes in voting laws.? The department would still be able to use another Section of the VRA to challenge voting laws that have a racially discriminatory impact.

Texas: State Attorney General Greg Abbott filed a suit last month in federal court, asking that Texas be permitted this year to use the photo ID law Gov. Rick Perry signed last spring.
Under Section 5 of the VRA, the Justice Department is now considering Texas?s law, having asked for additional information from the state on the race and ethnicity of Texas voters and drivers. The department must give its response to the Texas law by March 12.
In his filing, Abbott said Texas did not have the racial and ethnic data the Justice Department wanted. ?Indeed, the very reason Texas refuses to maintain racial and ethnic data on its list of registered voters is to facilitate a colorblind electoral process,? he said.
Even in the unlikely event the Justice Department were to approve the Texas law, opponents of the law contend that say there would be problems implementing it.
?The state is not ready to allow citizens the ability to obtain this kind of voter ID,? said Rep. Charlie Gonzales, D- Texas. ?It goes way beyond just going to the Department of Public Safety and standing in line. You still have to have your birth certificate; if you?re divorced and your name is different you have to get a certified copy of your divorce decree. There are so many hoops to jump through.?

Laws similar to those in South Carolina and Texas have passed in several states and are likely to be opposed by the Justice Department over the same concerns.
Alabama:? Another Section 5 state, Alabama passed a voter ID law which doesn?t take effect until 2014.
Mississippi:? Voters last November approved a ballot initiative to create a photo ID requirement. But the legislature must provide funding to implement the law and the state must receive Justice Department approval since Mississippi is a Section 5 state.
Wisconsin: On Tuesday Wisconsin conducted its first elections under the voter ID law that Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed last year.? Wisconsin is not covered by Section 5 of the VRA but challenges have already been launched. On Thursday civil rights groups and a labor union coalition filed a suit against the law arguing that it discriminates against black and Latino voters. The American Civil Liberties Union has also filed a suit seeking to block enforcement of the law. One argument ACLU makes is that the cost of obtaining a copy of a birth certificate ($20 in Wisconsin, more in other states) in order to get a state ID card would be ?a severe financial burden? for some people, a burden that violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
The voting in municipal and county primary elections in Wisconsin went smoothly, according to the Associated Press. Walker commented on his Twitter account: ?1st election w/photo ID required & it seems to have run well. Proof that common sense still works.?
But Rep. Gwen Moore, D- Wisc., a longtime political foe of Walker, alleges the governor "clearly has had a goal?for many,?many years to?disenfranchise people of color."
She also contended that the law would hurt President Barack Obama?s chances to win the state in November, adding, ?This is strictly designed to disenfranchise people who would otherwise vote for Democrats."
Asked to comment on Moore?s remarks, Walker?s spokesman Cullen Werwie said, ?Requiring photo identification to vote is common sense ? we require it to get a library card, cold medicine, and public assistance.? Gov. Walker will continue to implement common sense reforms that protect the electoral process and increases citizens? confidence in the results of our elections.??
May be enacted this year
Virginia:? The state Senate is likely to vote Friday on a bill that would require a voter to present some form of identification but would allow him or her to use an employee identification card containing a photograph of the voter, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck that shows the name and address of the voter. As a VRA Section 5-covered state, Virginia would need to gets its law cleared by the Justice Department.
Pennsylvania:? The Pennsylvania House passed a voter ID bill last year. Both Republican and Democratic sources say that there will be a renewed push for voter ID to pass in the state Senate, where the GOP has a 30 to 20 majority, and to be sent on to Republican Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature in the next couple of months. Corbett has said he supports a voter ID law.
Minnesota: A Minnesota state senate committee has approved a proposed amendment to the state constitution to require photo ID for voting, but it has yet to be approved by the full state senate and the state House. Last year, Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, vetoed a voter ID bill which had been passed by the Republican-majority state legislature.?
Missouri: On the November ballot is a proposed amendment to the state constitution which would allow for the legislature to impose a photo ID requirement. Republican state Sen. Bill Stouffer, the sponsor of that measure, predicts it will pass with 75 percent or more of the vote. The legislature last year passed a photo ID bill which Democratic Gov.? Jay Nixon vetoed.
Recently enacted
Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Kansas all enacted photo ID laws last year. None has yet been enjoined or struck down.? None of those states are covered by Section 5 of the VRA.
Not likely to be enacted this year
Iowa: The state?s Republican Secretary of State Matt Schultz has proposed a photo identification law but state Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal opposes the idea.
Ohio: The Ohio House passed a photo ID bill last year but the Senate didn?t act on it. The prospects do not look good for passing a bill this year, said Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican.
He said the photo ID bill last year ?polarized people over the whole concept of election reform and modernization. The photo ID bill was much more ?nuclear,?? he said, than another bill, which he supported, to shorten and standardize the early voting period in every country in the state.? ?Once it (the photo ID bill) came on the scene, the common-sense conversations stopped and ? it was really hard to build consensus around thoughtful reforms,? Husted said.?

LONDON (AP) -Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas came under even greater pressure Saturday after a 1-1 draw against Birmingham in the fifth round of the FA Cup left the Premier League club facing an unwanted replay.
Villas-Boas acknowledged this week that he had lost the support of some players after the west London club slipped to fifth in the Premier League and his team was jeered at Stamford Bridge after it needed a 62nd-minute equalizer from Daniel Sturridge to avoid a humiliating defeat.
"It was a quite poor result of course," Villas-Boas said. "1-1 is not what we were expecting but it gives us another chance at Birmingham to continue trying to win the trophy.
"The aggression was there and the desire and ambition, but I think Birmingham matched us today in that sense."
Second-tier side Birmingham lost captain Stephen Carr to a 12th-minute injury but took the lead eight minutes later when David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic failed to clear a corner kick, giving David Murphy the chance to smash the ball into the net from close range.
It was only the fourth goal Chelsea conceded in 12 FA Cup matches - a streak that includes the 2009 and '10 titles.
Chelsea missed the chance to level the scores when Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle saved Juan Mata's 22nd-minute penalty, awarded when Wade Elliott fouled Ramires, and the team was jeered off at the interval.
There were some cheers when Villas-Boas replaced the struggling Fernando Torres with Didier Drogba at halftime and even more when Sturridge headed in Ivanovic's cross, but the jeers returned when the coach hauled off Mata to bring on Frank Lampard late on.
Later Saturday, Everton hosts Blackpool, Bolton is at Millwall, Norwich hosts Leicester and Arsenal is at Premier League rival Sunderland.

Bittersweet homecoming for American who was caught in no-fly vortex

?PORTLAND, Ore. ? Family, friends and supporters celebrated the homecoming Tuesday of Jamal Tarhuni, a Libyan-American businessman whose return to the U.S. from North Africa was delayed by a month after he was detained for questioning by the FBI.
A burst of applause and cheering went up as Tarhuni emerged into the waiting area at Portland International Airport after clearing the last bureaucratic hurdle of his trip ? a two-hour wait to clear customs. His youngest son, 10-year-old Rashid, armed with helium balloons, stood at the front of a welcome line of men.
The tone of the homecoming quickly became serious again, as Tarhuni reassured others about the status of another member of the Libyan-American community ? Mustafa Elogbi, 60, who remains in Tunisia after being barred at the last minute from joining Tarhuni and their attorney, Tom Nelson, on the flight home.
Tarhuni, 55, left for Libya in October to deliver medical supplies to hospitals and refugee camps, but he said that when he tried to return on Jan. 17, he was denied boarding and directed to the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, where he was questioned extensively by FBI agents.
At the Portland airport, he addressed the gathered press with a message to the FBI:
"We value your work when you stop criminals," Tarhuni said. "We do not value your work when you do not do your homework and stop innocent people."
He called his ordeal a shock and said he was particularly disappointed in the U.S. Embassy.
"I was not able to get straight answers or help you would expect from your embassy abroad," he said. "I was not even able to get basic information on who made the decision to stop me from coming home."
Tuesday?s reunion with his wife, Nariman Samed, and four children ended a month of uncertainty for Tarhuni, a naturalized American citizen, but it did nothing to clarify why he was held or whether he faces further questioning. He does not know whether he is on the government?s secret no-fly list, which would prevent him from flying back to his native?Libya or in U.S. airspace.
The uncertainty around Elogbi remains, although he has booked a flight home from Tunis on Sunday.
"I?m really happy that Jamal Tarhuni is coming home, but I?m really ready for my dad to come home," said Elogbi?s daughter, Allaa, 20, fighting back tears. "(This return) does give me hope that within a week my dad will be here. ? But so far you don?t know if you can trust them or not, you know? There is no reason my dad should not be home today. There is no reason he shouldn?t have been home last month."
The crowd of about 40 people on hand to greet Tarhuni was a mixture of family and friends from Muslim and interfaith communities.

"What brings me out is injustice, not allowing someone to come home because they are Muslim or have an Arabic name, or a foreign-sounding name ? the nemesis du jour," said Pam Allee, a Portland resident who came to show support but does not know the families.
Karen Redington, a Christian who said she has worked with Tarhuni on interfaith events, carried an American flag and a sign that read: "I?m sorry."
"I am so sorry that this would happen to anyone, let alone somebody who is one of the most gentle, humble, caring men, who has taken the time to go back to his country of origin to bring millions and millions of dollars of humanitarian aid through Medical Teams International," she said. "I am so sorry. This does not represent this community; this does not represent this country."
No one was more relieved at Tarhuni?s return than Rashid, who was looking forward to spending some quality time with his dad after an absence of four months.
"He missed my birthday, so he said we?re going to have a cake and we?re going to go out and we?re going to invite my friends, maybe go to Evergreen waterpark. Or we?re going to take trip to Disneyland," he said.
Going forward, he said, he?s going to keep his eye on his dad:
"I?m going to hug him so much and never let him go back anywhere else, and tell him, ?If you?re going somewhere, the whole family comes with you.?"

The budget to be released by President Obama Monday is expected to include a one-third cut in NASA's Mars program, in part to pay for other cost overruns within the agency.
The most successful Mars exploration program in human history appears headed for serious downsizing as the White House and Congress struggle to tackle America's fiscal woes.
Skip to next paragraphIn the budget President Obama is sending to Congress Feb. 13, NASA's space-science program is slated for a 20 percent cut from its current level. The Mars exploration portion is expected to be cut by more than a third, according to early reports.
Overall, the reports suggest that the total budget request for NASA will come in close to this year's budget of $17.8 billion. But the agency is having to absorb significant cost overruns for the James Webb Space Telescope, successor to The Hubble Space Telescope, and has had to do likewise with the Mars Science Laboratory, currently en route to the red planet.
Meanwhile, the agency's Earth-science and human-spaceflight efforts are expected to fare better.
To be sure, whatever the president sends to Capitol Hill on Monday only begins the budget conversation for fiscal year 2013, analysts caution.
?The president's budget is just a proposal,? says Howard McCurdy, a space-policy specialist at American University in Washington who tracks space and technology policy.
Already, members of Congress from California and Texas are vowing to fight the cuts to the Mars program. Others are expected to follow.
The cuts ?reflect the new reality? in which the economy, budget deficits, and the federal debt have elbowed their way to the top of Washington's agenda,?McCurdy adds.
NASA accounts for only about 0.5 percent of the federal budget. But it falls under the broad category of discretionary spending ? the category easiest to pare when budgeteers hunt for spending cuts. The government is having to cope with mandatory cuts that kicked in for fiscal year 2013 after a ?super committee? in Congress failed to craft a bipartisan plan to deal with the deficit.
For Mars aficionados, a key concern is two ambitious missions jointly planned by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). Over the past several years, the two agencies have tried to merge their Mars exploration program, recognizing that the missions were getting too expensive for one agency to underwrite.
Plans called for sending an orbiter to Mars in 2016 to hunt for so-called trace gases in the atmosphere, especially methane, which can have a biological source. The two agencies also were going to split the cost of sending a rover to Mars in 2018, one capable of drilling deep into the Martian surface to hunt for signs of past or present life. It also would lay the groundwork for a later sample-return mission.
In an interview with the BBC Feb. 6, ESA's science director, Alvaro Gimenez, said, ?The Americans have indicated that the possibility of them participating is now low, very low. It's highly unlikely.?
The Europeans reportedly have started talks with the Russians to pick up activities the US would have undertaken.
On one level, the cuts anticipated in Obama's budget request for NASA's space-science program and its Mars component represent in microcosm a government trying to come to grips with burgeoning red ink.

Sarkozy advises against military strike on Iran (AP)
PARIS ? French President Nicolas Sarkozy put his reputation as a stalwart friend of Israel on the line Wednesday, warning that military action was no way to deal with nuclear-minded Iran at a dinner hosted by France's main Jewish group ? and his likely presidential election rival in the audience.
In the wake of new U.S. concerns that Israel might strike Iran's nuclear facilities this spring, Sarkozy reiterated his iron-clad commitment to Israel's security but emphasized "the solution is never military."
"The solution is political, the solution is diplomatic, the solution is in sanctions," Sarkozy said, referring to a string of U.N. sanctions over Iran's nuclear program, which the West fears mask designs to build weapons.
"We want the leaders of this country to understand that they have crossed a red line, and to reassure Israeli leaders so that the irreparable is not carried out," Sarkozy said of possible military action.
Tehran, whose Islamist leaders have called for Israel's destruction, insists its nuclear program is peaceful and aimed at generating electricity and civilian-sector projects.
Sarkozy's comments came amid high-stakes French political drama as France's best-known Jewish organization, CRIF, hosted the president and his most likely challenger in this spring's election: Socialist Francois Hollande.
The dinner that has become a must on France's political calendar in recent years offered a rare glimpse of the two longtime rivals together in public along with a who's who of the governing elite.
Hollande didn't miss the chance to make his presence known even if the president got to make an address ? and he did not. After Sarkozy's speech, he got up from his table, crossed the ballroom and greeted the president ? shaking hands with him and others at a vast table reserved for the Cabinet.
Afterward, Hollande told The Associated Press he had said simply "Bonjour" to the president. Sarkozy, also asked by the AP to recount their encounter, did not answer ? and responded only with a smile and shrug.
Richard Prasquier, the CRIF president, told French TV that the on-camera handshake was a boon for his group, suggesting it had showcased the dinner as a premium appointment in French poltics.
For weeks, polls have indicated Sarkozy would lose by a double-digit percentage point gap if the presidential election were held today. Political tensions have flared and party loyalties grown increasingly venimous of late.
Sarkozy, whose maternal grandfather was Jewish and has had a reputation as a friend of Israel, helped make the CRIF event the near-obligatory annual social stop for politicians of the two mainstream parties ? Sarkozy's conservative UMP party, and Hollande's Socialists. Sarkozy was the first serving head of state to attend, in 2008. Hollande noted he too has attended for years.
"I don't know who will make the address in 2013," Hollande quipped.

3 ministers resign in porn scandal in south India (AP)
NEW DELHI ? Three government ministers in the southern Indian state of Karnataka resigned Wednesday after they were accused of watching a pornographic video during an assembly session.
The right wing Bharatiya Janata Party, which rules Karnataka, ordered the three ministers to resign after local television channels aired footage Tuesday of the men watching the allegedly pornographic video clip while the state assembly proceedings were going on.
The ministers denied they were watching pornography, but said they were resigning to save their party from embarrassment.
The governor of Karnataka accepted the resignations.
Television footage showed Laxman Savadi, minister for cooperation, watching the video clip on his mobile phone and then passing the phone to C. C. Patil, minister for women and child development.
The mobile phone belonged to the minister for ports, Krishna Palemar, who also resigned.
Soon after television stations aired the footage, outraged residents of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, held protests outside the homes of the three ministers, demanding their resignation.
The three men said they were not watching pornography. Savadi said he was watching a video clip of a rave party to prepare for a discussion in the assembly.

Could Russia leave US astronauts stranded in space?
A leaky Soyuz descent capsule means that astronauts aboard the International Space Station will have to wait another six weeks before returning home. And private resupply missions are not ready for prime time.
A botched pressure test of a Russian space capsule slated to launch the next crew to the International Space Station has forced NASA and its partners to delay the planned liftoff for more than a month.

The Soyuz's crew capsule, one of three modules that make up the entire Soyuz TMA-04M vehicle, ?has been scrapped after an accident during testing caused it to spring a leak in one of its descent module's rocket thruster fuel tanks. Now Russia's main space contractor, RSC Energia, is readying the next spaceship on the line, though the issue will cause a lengthy delay.
"This particular event is very unfortunate, but you know this is a complicated business and things happen," Suffredini said. "To me this is not indicative of some overarching problem at the Energia corporation. With the retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet last year, Russia's three-person Soyuz space capsules are currently the only vehicle available to ferry American astronauts to and from the International Space Station. NASA plans to eventually use private U.S.-built commercial spacecraft to transport crews and cargo to the station, but those new vehicles are still years away from being ready.
Meanwhile, NASA is contemplating another delay ? in this case, of the unmanned SpaceX Dragon capsule's inaugural trip to deliver supplies to the space station. The private spacecraft was due to make its first test launch to the orbiting laboratory on Feb. 7, but Suffredini said the latest target date is March 20, and even that might be a stretch, as the vehicle still requires more testing and some minor fixes.
The faulty Soyuz capsule was slated to carry NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin up to the space station to begin long-duration stays.
They were due to replace three of the Expedition 30 spaceflyers currently living on the outpost: NASA astronaut Dan Burbank?and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin.
However, because of the Soyuz issues, NASA and Russia have decided to extend the current crew's mission to keep the space station running smoothly. Those three were scheduled to return to Earth March 16, but now will come home April 30.
The delay is also likely to cause rippling setbacks in other planned launches and landings later this year.
