Brno, April 29 (CTK) - Israeli academics will start conducting research and lecturing at Masaryk University in Brno under the Theodor Herzl Chair fund whose establishment was signed by Czech Education Minister Petr Fiala and Israeli ambassador Yaakov Levy Monday.

The Theodor Herzl Chair will make it possible for selected academics and professors, especially in the sphere of humanities, to stay two weeks to six months in Brno.

The project will be funded by the Israeli government that set aside 416.000 dollars for the next five years.

The first Israeli experts may start seeking their participation in the project as of July 2 this year and until December 31 in next years.

An expert commission will evaluate the applicants.

Czech-Israeli academic cooperation has been conducted in the opposite direction, too.

In 2011, thanks to the donation of ten million crowns by the Czech government, the Czech-Israeli Masaryk Distinguished Chair fund was established at the Herzliya university.

Czech scholars can now stay, give lectures and conduct research at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center.

In the first year, the opportunity was used by two applicants and this year seven have voiced interest. The selection has not yet ended.

"Both activities mean that both Czech and Israeli academics in the sphere of humanities and social sciences have an opportunity to examine Czech and Israeli societies, which intensively helps develop bilateral knowledge and our relations," Fiala said.

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) was the founder of Zionism that eventually led to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

Israel highly esteems the legacy of first Czechoslovak President Tomas Garrigue Masaryk (1918-1935) who backed Zionist aspirations.

Interwar Czechoslovakia was one of the first countries to have acknowledged Jewish ethnic origin. Three Zionist congresses were held in the country.

Masaryk paid an official visit to Palestine in 1927.
