As a child, Robert Rodriguez fell in love with movies - not just the stories and characters, but how they were made and produced. Using his family's hand held Super-8 camera, he began to create his own films at a young age; he soon found that he was going to have to be very creative in order to realize his creative aspirations without the resources film making required. To this end, he often employed his family to assist him - casting them in roles in the films, having them assisting with camera work and also getting them to drive him to various locations around town that he would use as scenery. Basically, he had no money to work with and found ways to make everything work despite this fact. This creativity and ingenuity would serve him well later on.
Robert allowed himself to be used as a test subject for various drug and food companies, and with the money he raised he put together the 1992 film 'El Mariachi' - he is known for really making things happen, and this is just another item in his list of successes. The film, centered around a guitar playing Mariachi who gets tangled up with a gang in Mexico, was shot and produced for $7000 and he was able to qualify for inclusion in the esteemed Sundance Film Festival that same year. Columbia Studios picked up the film for distribution and it was a popular feature at the festival.
This marked the start of Rodriguez's career as a Hollywood professional. Robert worked with such notables as Antonio Banderas, George Clooney, Salma Hayek and Quentin Tarantino after his success at Sundance. He had an amazing ability to produce the look and feel of Hollywood big budget pictures while keeping costs down and within budget.
At this point a complete production house was set up in Rodriguez's home - the realization of his childhood dreams. At home, he was able to completely create his films including any necessary post-production special effects, and he used his 'by necessity' esthetic that he developed in his childhood. His debut in the financially rewarding children's film venue, came in 2011 when he made 'Spy Kids', and this departure for him surprised peers and theater-goers alike. The film was an enormous hit that went on to spawn three additional sequels.
Having been mentored in the ways of cost saving digital film making techniques from none other than digital pioneer George Lucas, Rodriguez was now able to expand the production values of his films and spend even less money doing so. With his friend Quentin Tarantino he worked on 'Grindhouse', a movie that is a 70s throwback and he also co-directed the visually captivating film 'Sin City'.
