Tropical storm Gordon continued to move eastward across the Atlantic Ocean on Friday, raising the probability that it could threaten the Azores off the coast of Portugal later this weekend.
The tropical storm, which had maximum sustained winds at 65 mph as of Friday morning, could still become a hurricane over the weekend. The storm is moving east at 18 mph and could approach the Azores by Sunday night,?NBCMiami.com reported. However, it's still about 1,100 miles west of the islands, according to the National Hurricane Center on Friday.
No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
Closer to the United States, forecasters are also keeping an eye on a tropical depression that might regenerate in the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center said there is an 80 percent chance of tropical cyclone formation. An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft is expected to investigate this system Friday afternoon.
