Stocks mostly rose on Monday after a surprisingly strong report on U.S. manufacturing gave investors a reason to think the economy might be improving. Stocks gave up some of their gains in the afternoon. Monday was the first trading day of the fourth quarter.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 77.98 points, or 0.6 percent, to close at 13,515.11.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.82 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,444.49.
The Nasdaq composite fell 2.70 points, or 0.1 percent, to 3,113.53.
For the year so far:
The Dow is up 1,297.55 points, or 10.6 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 186.89 points, or 14.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 508.38 points, or 19.5 percent.
