Unemployed veterans skilled in doing jobs, not in finding them

A Monster.com survey finds employers and veterans agree: Departing military personnel have civilian job skills. Language, however, is a problem. One hurdle is translating military jargon.

By Mary Wiltenburg,?Contributor / May 30, 2012

Krista Titus, coordinator for the Employment Resource Center at the Arizona National Guard Papago base, 5636 E. McDowell Road, prepares to look through some of the more than 1,300 applications of military veterans inside the white folders who are looking for jobs, on May 1.

Veterans today are having a harder time finding jobs than most Americans ? but why??They leave the military with sought-after skills.?Most are willing to move for the right job.?Employers who hire them overwhelmingly say they?re glad they did.?

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

So what?s the problem??In April, Monster.com, the world?s largest job-search site, and its subsidiary Military.com, the biggest online resource for current and former service members, surveyed 900 employers and more than 900 returning veterans in an effort to find out.?

Their results, released Wednesday in their second, semiannual Veterans Talent Index (VTI), found that majorities of both veterans and employers feel that men and women are leaving the military well prepared to do civilian jobs, but badly prepared to land them.?

?There?s a communication gap here,? says T.L. McCreary, president of Military.com.??It seems like the veteran and the employer talking past each other, at times.?

One hurdle is learning to speak with less military jargon.

Take the example of a Navy fire controlman, the person who operates a ship?s weapons systems and fires its missiles.?On discharge, if he sends a resume full of military acronyms and Tomahawk missiles to a computer or electronics company, he?s unlikely to even get an interview.?Translated into civilian language, though, his qualifications could be perfect, since his day-to-day military work was operating, maintaining, and repairing sophisticated microcomputers.?Whether the veteran can spell that out could mean the difference between a good job and an unemployment statistic.?

?There?s misunderstanding on both sides of the aisle,? says Jason Hansman, membership director for the nonprofit Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

?When less than one percent of the population has served, it?s hard for the other 99 percent to relate to their experience and then be like: ?Yes, this person can help my bottom line.? ?

But there?s a great need to bridge that gap ? on both sides.?Since Sept. 11, 2001, 2.7 million US veterans have served in the military. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, their unemployment rate is 9.2 percent ? compared with 7.6 percent of nonveterans ? and young workers and women suffer even higher rates.?Over a million more Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans are expected to return to civilian life in the next five years.?

Gartner: Over $172B In Mobile Payments In 2012; SMS, Web Most Popular Routes

mobile paymentNo, NFC still hasn't come to the iPhone -- or many other devices, for that matter. But this does not appear to be stopping the momentum in the world of mobile payments. Research out today from Gartner says that this year will see more than $171.5 billion in mobile payment transactions -- a rise of over 60 percent on 2011's $105.9 billion -- with 212.2 million people (up 32 percent from 160.5m in 2011) using some form of mobile payment service. And what's fuelling the rise? Despite the rise of smartphones, it's legacy-based services like SMS and web-based transactions. Longer term, Gartner believes that transactions will reach a volume of $617 billion by 2016 -- with average growth slightly slowing down to around 42 percent -- with 448 million users using such services.

Just What Is Online Development? | Online Success Articles

?

The term ?web development? has expanded and advanced a great deal in the last decade. It used to be that having an internet existence was a novelty, something to throw on a business card or in a commercial. Websites were reserved for the businesses with the means to spread them widely, or for individuals that didn?t care who observed what they posted.

Web development is noticeably different these days. The end objective is the same? a site on the Internet designed to market an organization, service or firm. These days you could also sell products and services, correspond directly with the business and do so much more. What is web development these days?

Web development has actually come to be a mixture of discipline and also art, just the same as marketing. To succeed online, one needs to understand exactly what to do as well as just what not to do so that a search engine picks them up. On top of that, a website has to be produced for the ultimate utility and usability. We?ve come a long way from the days of frames, embedded music and animated backgrounds. A web page is a major tool for serious enterprises.

Another major distinction is the procedure. Web composition is no longer about setting up a descriptive page and letting it sit. Sites have to be consistently updated, with material suitable for the business and their intentions. Going too long without an update loses visitors and also loses trust. Social media websites have a substantial influence in this too. A firm that ties their internet existence into sociable media is a lot more in touch with their readers and can benefit directly from that contact.

Once again, what is web development? It?s all relating to the online presence. Holding a presence on the internet is just as essential as having a physical storefront, and takes just as much work. Designing an internet site concerns style and substance, the balance amidst a fancy site and a site that can be utilized by all. All of this needs to be carefully planned and implemented by talented designers and online developers that know the markets and know exactly what they?re doing.

Thankfully, there are a lot of proficient designers out on the market, all set to create the perfect website for any type of business, local or otherwise. As complex as it is creating an internet site, there are individuals who make it their life?s work. Virtually every great website these days has a proficient developer behind it, and it shows. That?s web development.

15 dead in latest killer quake in northern Italy

MIRANDOLA, Italy (AP) ? A powerful earthquake killed at least 15 people and left 200 injured Tuesday as it rocked a swath of northern Italy. Factories, warehouses and churches collapsed, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands are still homeless from another temblor just nine days ago.

The 5.8 magnitude quake left 14,000 people homeless in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, one of Italy's most agriculturally and industrially productive areas.

It was felt from Piedmont in northwestern Italy to Venice in the northeast and as far north as Austria. Dozens of aftershocks hit the area, some registering more than 5.0 in magnitude.

The temblor terrified many of the thousands who have been living in tents or cars since the May 20 quake and created a whole new wave of homeless.

"I was shaving and I ran out very fast, half dressed," a resident of Sant'Agostino, one of the towns devastated in the quake earlier this month, told AP Television News.

Tuesday's quake struck just after 9:00 a.m. with an epicenter 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Bologna, according to the U.S. Geological Survey ? just a handful of (miles) kilometers away from where the 6.0-magnitude quake that killed seven people on May 20 was centered.

Government undersecretary Antonio Catricala, briefing the Senate in Rome, said at least 15 people were killed, some 200 injured and seven people missing. The number of homeless swelled by several thousand, to a total of 14,000, he said.

While Tuesday's quake was about 100 times less intense than the one May 20, its death toll was more than twice as high. In both, the dead included workers killed by collapsing factories and warehouses.

In the town of Mirandola, near the epicenter, the church of San Francis crumbled, leaving only its facade standing. The main cathedral also collapsed.

Sant'Agostino's town hall, so damaged in the May 20 quake that it looked as if it had been bombed, virtually collapsed when the latest deadly temblor struck.

In a hastily called news conference, Premier Mario Monti pledged the government will do "all that it must and all that is possible in the briefest period to guarantee the resumption of normal life in this area that is so special, so important and so productive for Italy."

The region around Bologna is among the country's most productive. Italy is desperately in need of its industries, for the country is in the midst of another recession and struggling to tame its massive debt as the European debt crisis worsens.

Many victims of the new quake, like the one nine days ago, were at work in huge warehouses that collapsed, including one dead inside a machinery factory in Mirandola.

Labor Minister Elsa Fornero suggested the destruction to buildings was out of proportion, considering the magnitude of the quake.

"It is natural that the earth shakes. But it is not natural that buildings collapse," Fornero said, briefing lawmakers in the lower Chamber of Deputies in Parliament.

The mayor of San Felice sul Panaro told Sky News 24 that there were fatalities in his town, where Italian media said a tower had collapsed.

Tall buildings and schools were evacuated as far away as Milan as a precaution before people were allowed to re-enter. Train lines connecting Bologna with other northern cities were halted while authorities checked for any damage.

When the quake hit, Monti was meeting with emergency officials in Rome to discuss the impact of the earlier quake, which struck in the middle of the night and left at least 7,000 homeless.

The May 20 quake was described by Italian emergency officials as the worst to hit the region since the 1300s. In addition to the deaths, it knocked down a clock tower and other centuries-old buildings and caused millions in losses to a region known for making Parmesan cheese. Its epicenter was about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Bologna.

It's not clear why two large quakes have appeared just this month, said Jessica Turner, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. The basic driver of the activity is the same kind of geological shifting that produced the Alps, she said.

Prior to May 20, the last earthquake in the region with magnitude that large was in 1501.

Residents had just been taking tentative steps toward resuming normal life when the second quake struck. In Sant'Agostino, a daycare center had just reopened.

In the town of Concordia, the mayor had scheduled a town meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the aftermath of the first quake. Instead, mayor Carlo Marchini confirmed the death of one person struck by falling debris in the town's historic center.

Italy's friendly soccer match against Luxembourg, a warm-up match for the Euro 2012 championships, was canceled. The game had been scheduled to be played Tuesday in Parma, just 40 miles (60 kilometers) west of the quake.

Troy Roness: Call Me a 'Milksop' All You Wish, But I'm No 'Yes Man'

What are we going to do about all of the "non-manly" guys running around the United States? Apparently, the great assumption is that by engaging in activities ranging from military exercises to boy scouting, we could eliminate the "problem" altogether.

I am 100-percent in support of greater parental involvement in children's lives these days, especially when positive role models, life skills, coping mechanisms, and constructive reinforcement are lacking at alarming levels. Joel Stein's appearance this week on Fox & Friends regarding his book, Man-Made, doesn't just talk about how culture views men and how they "should" act; it really points out how misunderstood men and boys are when they don't conform to societal views of the traditional guy.

The book attempts to show how a scared, soon-to-be father tries to become manlier by hunting, rebuilding a house, trying boot camp, and going into the UFC ring. In the end, as expected, the fa?ade that all men need to act a certain way to be accepted is busted. I feel terrible that the author actually labeled himself "effete." This is the word thrown at children, boys, men, and fathers who may not act or parent in a particular way. But there are so many holes in this "man-made" theory that you could drive a truck through it.

Is the thought of becoming more masculine by virtue of performing tasks or going through certain trials just an emotional high? I ask because at times, after treatments for addiction or illness or at the beginning of a relationship, people go through a "honeymoon" period where life appears perfect and they feel as if they were never in trouble. Does this actually have a lasting impact? My background in cognitive science tells me this begs further research.

As a member of the LGBT community, I'm sure I am able to speak for many men, and women, who are stereotyped into categories of how we should or shouldn't behave. I think back to the author of this book and wonder at what point someone becomes "enough." When I say that, I am referring to the point at which it's viewed as sufficient for you or someone else. Just like recovery, it is a different timeline for everyone.

As a gay man, I am probably thought by those who do not know me to enjoy certain activities, prefer certain music, have a particular political affiliation, etc. That's fine. Allow them to believe as they wish. But just for argument's sake, what exactly could have made me masculine or more feminine? From the book's perspective, I ought to be more masculine than most guys I know. I played baseball, basketball, track, hockey, and football; ran college track; branded and herded cattle; spent a lot of time traveling across the country and world, apart from my family (you'll understand why I list this if you read the book); fell on glass during a camping trip with no supplies to treat the injury; tore ligaments in my knee; knocked teeth out; broke my chin on concrete; and managed to slice my hand down to the bone with my own track cleat. I was taught to never give up or back down, and a perfect example is when I lay injured on the football field and heard my family scream, "You're fine! Get back up!"

So at what point did I become "man enough" for myself, my friends, or the world? What defines or shows the line of when "enough is enough"? If I break bones, do trainings, or am abandoned or taught senseless lessons, does that draw the line? Or is it at another point in my life when I am emotionally scarred because I didn't allow myself to talk about things I may have wanted to? The truth is, I don't believe in that line or label, and I actually feel that emotionally, I have become more of a "man" out of the sheer privilege of identifying with others than the physical toll life has taken.

For one individual, this type of experience may "work" in a particular circumstance, just as some medications may work for some and not others. But to say that men in general aren't "man enough" is a vast, sweeping generalization. This is where society is far behind the times. A complete individual understands their emotions and is confident enough to express them as they feel they need.

The LGBT community, men, women, and society in general need to stop being defined by what we are said to be lacking or by what we don't "fit" into. Instead, we should take a look at our own emotions, the distinguishing ways in which we experience them, and their role in who we are. Wouldn't it be an overwhelming sense of gratification if we understood that concept, and why we are the way we are? Wouldn't it be great if we could finally explain ourselves without preoccupation or hesitancy as a result of fear?

The LGBT community and I'm sure other groups often feel that they need to be completely self-reliant. They are sometimes forced to focus on providing solely for themselves and feel they have to hide their emotions. This behavior is reinforced every day in the various stereotypes characterized by our culture.

Listen, honest power does not lie in what we regard as being strong, today. It lies in the capacity of a human being to express their inner feelings and recognize the intuitive perceptions of others.

Iran, big powers agree to hold more nuclear talks in June

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iran and world powers agreed to meet again next month to try to ease the long standoff over its nuclear work despite achieving scant progress at talks in Baghdad towards resolving the main sticking points of their dispute.

At its heart is Iran's insistence on right to enrich uranium and that economic sanctions should be lifted before it shelves activities that could lead to its achieving the capability to develop nuclear weapons.

Western powers insist Tehran must first shut down higher-grade enrichment before sanctions could be eased.

But both sides have powerful reasons not to abandon diplomacy. The powers want to avert the danger of a new Middle East war raised by Israeli threats to bomb Iran, while Tehran also wants to avoid a looming Western ban on its oil exports.

After discussions in Baghdad extended late into an unscheduled second day on Thursday between envoys from Iran and the six powers, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said it was clear both sides wanted progress and had some common ground, but significant differences remained.

"We will maintain intensive contacts with our Iranian counterparts to prepare a further meeting in Moscow," she told a news conference in Baghdad.

The next meeting, the third in the latest round of talks that began in Istanbul last month after a diplomatic vacuum of 15 months, will be held in Moscow on June 18-19.

Ashton leads the negotiations for the six-country group made up of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - which together with Germany is known as the P5+1.

"Talks were intensive and long," Saeed Jalili, Iran's chief negotiator and direct representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said. "They were detailed, but left unfinished.

"The atmosphere of these talks was positive for the two sides to talk about their issues in a clear way," Jalili added. "We believe the result of these talks was that we were able to get to know each other's views better and more."

While there was little if any concrete progress, the fact that the two sides agreed to continue talks was a sign of progress in itself, after more than a year of not meeting at all before the latest round of negotiations began in April.

"The two sides' commitment to diplomacy in the absence of any clear agreement is a positive sign," said Ali Vaez, Iran expert at the International Crisis Group think-tank.

"All parties should be commended for returning to the negotiating table. (U.S. President Barack) Obama should be commended for having turned diplomacy into a process rather than the one-off meetings that existed in the past," wrote Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian American Council.

"Both sides entered negotiations with their maximalist positions, and neither budged. Looking ahead, now the hard work begins."

Iran, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, says it is enriching uranium only in order to generate electricity to serve the needs of a burgeoning population, and for a medical research reactor.

The skeptical powers want practical steps from the Islamic Republic to address their concerns over its nuclear program.

Chief among such concerns is Iran's ability to enrich uranium to a fissile concentration of 20 percent. That is the nuclear advance most worrying to the West since it opens the way to reaching 90 percent, or bomb-grade, enrichment.

"Iran declared its readiness to address the issue of 20 percent enrichment and came with its own five-point plan, including their assertion that we recognize their right to enrichment," Ashton said.

IRAN INSISTS ON ITS RIGHTS

Iran says it will not exceed 20 percent and the material will be made into fuel for a research reactor.

Iran has hinted at flexibility on higher-grade enrichment but Iranian media said it would not give away its most potent bargaining chip without significant concessions on sanctions.

"We never expected to get that agreement (on 20 percent) here in Baghdad," said a senior U.S. administration official who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the subject.

But, he said "there is agreement to address all aspects of 20 percent as we put it on the table".

A significant difference between the two sides is Iran's insistence on what Jalili called "an undeniable right of the Iranian nation" to enrich uranium.

"Obviously (that) was not something we were prepared to do," the official said, echoing the U.S. view that Iran does not automatically have this right under international law because, it argues, Iran has violated obligations under counter-proliferation safeguards by having hidden sensitive nuclear activity from U.N. inspectors in the past.

The United States and its allies have imposed tough sanctions on Iran's energy and financial sectors to try to force it to compromise and open up its nuclear activities to scrutiny.

EU states are set to introduce a total embargo of Iranian crude oil purchases in July. Diplomats say the measure will not be cancelled unless Tehran acts to rein in enrichment first.

Iranian Oil Minister Qasem Rostani dismissed the threat of an oil embargo, saying Tehran's adversaries would suffer more in the form of soaring crude prices.

"With the absence of Iran's oil in global markets, something will happen to the global economy that will greatly reduce economic growth of developing and developed countries. The world is concerned about this issue today," Rostami said on Friday.

"I hope they (the West) understand what would happen if Iran's oil is no longer in the market. If they are wise, they would learn from this period of time when oil prices jumped with only talks of sanctions..."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said there would be no let-up in sanctions against Iran, even as talks continue.

The senior U.S. official said the six powers were going to try to advance the talks "as fast as we can". But it was too early to talk about technical level or expert meetings because the broader political issues still needed to be clarified.

The official said sanctions coming into effect in coming weeks would increase leverage on Iran in the negotiations.

"Maximum pressure is not yet being felt by Iran," the official said, adding there were many other potential sanctions that remained to be employed.

WORRIES ABOUT WAR

The powers want Iran to send its more highly refined uranium abroad, close an underground plant devoted to 20 percent enrichment which is largely invulnerable to air strikes and submit to more intrusive U.N. nuclear inspections.

In return, they have offered fuel to keep Iran's medical isotope reactor running, assistance in nuclear safety and an end to a ban on spare parts for Iran's ageing civilian aircraft.

A senior hardline Iranian cleric was dismissive. "They keep saying Iran should take confidence-building steps. How many times should Iran do this? You have inspected our nuclear sites a number of times and have not found anything," Ahmad Khatami said in a sermon at Friday prayers in Tehran.

"The P5+1 should know that the Iranian nation is not the kind to submit to blackmail and ... that (our) people are here and are standing firm on their rights."

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly ruled out suspending all enrichment as called for by several U.N. Security Council resolutions, saying nuclear energy is a matter of national sovereignty and pride in technological progress.

Which of the basic assumptions of modern physics are wrong? Announcing the fourth Foundational Questions Institute essay contest

FQXI logoThere?s something unnerving about unifying physics. The two theories that need to be unified, quantum field theory and Einstein?s general theory of relativity, are both?highly successful. Both make predictions good to as many decimal places as experimentalists can manage. Both are grounded in compelling principles. Both do have flaws ? including an unfortunate tendency to produce the number ? ? but those flaws remain safely behind the scenes, never undermining the theories? empirical successes.

And yet, if the theories are incompatible, something has to give. That is what makes unification so hard. In conferences, I see physicists go down the list of assumptions that underpin their theories. Each, it seems, is rock solid. But they can?t all be right. Maybe one will, on closer inspection, prove to be not like the others. Or maybe physicists have left the culprit off their list because it is so deeply embedded in their way of thinking that they don?t even recognize as an assumption. As economist John Maynard Keynes wrote, ?The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones, which ramify? into every corner of our minds.?

So, for its latest essay contest, the Foundational Questions Institute is asking entrants to ferret out these mental interlopers: ?Which of Our Basic Physical Assumptions Are Wrong?? Scientific American is a co-sponsor of the contest, which, in practical terms, means that I?ll serve as one of the judges and my colleagues and I will consider the top-placed winners for publication. The previous contest, on the question of ?Is Reality Digital or Analog??, drew lots of mind-opening, Zeitgeist-challenging entries. I summarized my favorites here, and one will appear in the magazine this fall.

The contest will remain open through August 31st. The fun part is that you don?t need to submit an essay to participate. All the essays are available for reading, remarking, and rating. The community rankings factor into the judging decision, which we?ll announce in early December.

Popular summer tourist destinations may 'see' the effects

The hordes of bark beetles that have bored their way through more than six billion trees in the western United States and British Columbia since the 1990s do more than kill stately pine, spruce and other trees.

Results of a new study show that these pests can make trees release up to 20 times more of the organic substances that foster haze and air pollution in forested areas.

A paper reporting the findings appears today in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, published by the American Chemical Society.

Scientists Kara Huff Hartz of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Gannet Hallar of the Desert Research Institute's Storm Peak Laboratory in Steamboat Springs, Colo., and colleagues say that western North America is experiencing a population explosion of mountain pine beetles, a type of bark beetle that damages and kills pines and other trees.

The beetles bore into the bark of pine trees to lay eggs.

Gases called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from the bore holes, which act as defense mechanisms against the beetles.

VOCs, however, also contribute to the smog and haze that obscures views of natural landscapes in U.S. national parks and other natural areas where tourists flock in summer.

"These results highlight one of the many potential feedbacks due to aerosols, which continue to be the greatest challenge to improving predictive models for air quality, visibility and climate," says Alex Pszenny, program director in the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, which funded the research.

To determine how beetle attacks affect the atmosphere, the researchers measured VOC levels in the air near healthy and infected pine trees.

They found that beetle-infested trees release up to 20 times more VOCs than healthy trees near the ground surface.

The predominant type of VOC released by trees was called -phellandrene.

The data suggest that the bark beetle epidemic in the western United States could have led to higher concentrations of organic compounds in the air, which may contribute to haze.

The haze, say the scientists, may in turn harm human health, reduce visibility and affect climate.

Creative teases Sound Blaster Axx with the most forced puns we've ever seen

Image

It's been a long, long while since Creative spruced up its Sound Blaster audio hardware, so a teaser for something new certainly has us intrigued. The page mentions little beyond an Axx name and that there will be a "whole new generation" of the technology uncovered on May 30th. There's a contest to win whatever the device might be if you're astute enough to predict the future name, but this may be a softball question given the not-so-subtle hints. Between terrible puns about the "axx-traterestrial" coming and winners getting to "axx-perience" the technology first, we have a feeling that any name that doesn't put "Axx" front and center is out of the running.

Masturbation ? Averee van der Linde | FMST 316: Human Sexuality ...

I was just wondering what people?s thoughts are on regular masturbation while in a long-term relationship (dating/married). ?I understand that masturbation is?thought?to be a healthy activity, a way to relieve stress, a great way to get to know your body, etc. ? particularly during adolescence. ?However, when you enter a relationship, should you stop/lessen the amount that you masturbate because you have to think about how it affects your partner?

I know that not everyone shares my views, but personally, if my boyfriend were to go home every night after being intimiate with me and jack off to porn stars, I would feel hurt. ?I understand that people have their needs, and we live in a country where we have a lot of sexual freedom, but don?t we also have freedom to say no to some things that might hurt other people we care about?

I also feel like this depends on the context of masturbation. I feel like for some people, masturbation is more a physical thing than a mental/emotional thing, and it?s all about getting your body what it needs. ?However, I also know that for ?some people, including myself, masturbation is very much about the storyline and the ideas in my head, and less about what I?m actually doing to my body. ?Because of this, I sometimes think about what I masturbate to, and I think that if I were to tell my boyfriend about it, he would be hurt.
