Engen continues to show its support for a green South Africa

?Engen is a funding partner of not-for-profit social enterprise Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA), as well as an active supporter of its EduPlant programme ? a food garden and skills transfer programme benefiting many schools and communities nationally,? says Khanyisa Balfour, Group Corporate Social Investment manager for Engen. FTFA has been planting trees and greening communities across South Africa for 22 years. ?We traditionally focus on Arbor Month as part of our greening efforts across all regions in which we operate to promote the role trees play in enriching the environment and improving lives.?

In addition to distributing trees, schools receive garden resources and equipment, and booklets guiding their tree-planting activities that enrich their understanding of environmental matters.

?In many instances, Engen personally selects beneficiaries, which also include other NGOs and children?s homes,? says Balfour. ?Our employees also get involved, helping with planting when needed, or simply because they love giving back and connecting with communities.?

Balfour says the green legacy of a tree works on multiple levels. ?We don?t just plant indigenous and fruit trees on school premises ? we?re also planting a seed of knowledge in learners. Trees play a fundamental role in improving environments, sequestering carbon, cleaning the air and acting as a wind-break. Over and above this, fruit trees also contribute to food security, making them socially, economically and environmentally important.?

FTFA ecopreneur, Sipho Mathe, think there is no better gift to give than a tree. ?It fundamentally improves all aspects of the area it is planted in, making it a wonderful asset for everyone?.
